Top things to do in Botswana
Botswana is a country of wild variety, dramatic scenery and untamed parks, and is considered one of Africa’s diamonds. From the shimmer of the Okavango Delta’s crystal clear waters to the sight of hundreds of elephants in the Chobe National Park, there is lots to see and do in this striking country.
The Okavango Delta
The Okavango Delta, UNESCO World Heritage site, is the watering hole for the world’s rarest mammals including both black and white rhinoceros, cheetahs and the African wild dog, also known as ‘painted wolves’. Unusually, its delta floods during the dry season, so a variety of animals can be seen in abundance.
They are best spotted from a mokoro, Botswana’s traditional canoe, which offers an exhilarating experience, perfect for adrenalin junkies.
The Chobe National Park
Best for wildlife spotting is Chobe National Park, which is also a wet wonderland. The waters from the Chobe River sustains Africa’s greatest elephant population who roam the area in impressive herds of up to 400, and it also supports a spectacular variety of birds including ostriches, eagles and storks.
Makgadikgadi Salt Pans
The former watery wonder of the Makgadikgadi Salt Pans is a haven for birds, with its bright-white sparkle, the result of the once mighty lake that evaporated under the African sun. Today, it is perfect for camera trickery, as across the sea of salt perspective is lost. So float above mountains, hold a 4×4 in the palm of your hand and get dwarfed by the greater flamingos that breed in the area.
Victoria Falls
Although not in Botswana, the Victoria Falls are easily visited whilst in Botswana. You can visit the Victoria Falls and shop for curios in the town centre, or participate in activities such as game and bird watching, golf, a nature walk, plus a visit to the crocodile and snake farm. If you are more adventurous, you can enjoy white water rafting, bungee jumping or horseback riding.
Our suggested Botswana itineraries:
Desert & Delta – Northern Parks
The best time to visit Botswana is in winter (our summer) just after the rainy season, when the delta floods and springs to life. Central Botswana is at its best in Africa’s summer, when the region’s desert and salt pans turn to grassland, drawing lots of wildlife.
