Tanzanian Treasures
Tanzania is full of surprises. It boasts some of the most incredible wildlife in the world: the Serengeti National Park and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area are filled to the brim with amazing flora and fauna, and the annual wildebeest migration is a definite bucket list must-see. Yet, while most tourists stick to seeing the Big Five on safari, the country has a lot to offer those who stray off the beaten path. Here are some of Tanzania’s treasures that are well worth a visit:
Mount Kilimanjaro
Reaching 5895m, Mount Kilimanjaro is the highest peak in Africa. This inactive volcano offers stunning views of Tanzania and the surrounding area from its snow-covered summit. Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro can be a challenge, but there are a number of routes available that are suitable for everyone, regardless of climbing ability. Most routes take between five to nine days to complete and can involve extreme altitude changes and unpredictable weather, so it’s important that you’re well prepared for the journey. However, the entire experience is extremely worthwhile, and will stay with you long after you’ve completed the climb.
Pemba
Smaller and less visited than Zanzibar, the island of Pemba is ideal for those who are looking for a peaceful and luxurious beach getaway that is also full of adventure. Sitting only 50km east of mainland Tanzania, the island has an area of just 988km2 but it has much to offer its visitors, from secluded beaches to historic ruins. With its plentiful marine life, colourful corals and crystal clear waters, your visit to Pemba is incomplete without heading out on a diving or snorkelling trip.
Mahale Mountains National Park
Mahale Mountains National Park is a definite must see for those who love chimpanzees. This national park is unusual in that it can only be visited on foot; there are no roads within the park and in order to reach it you’ll need to take a boat across Lake Tanganyika. Heading out on a chimp trekking adventure will give you the best opportunity to see these exciting and dynamic animals in their natural habitat. The national park is also home to many other animals such as lions, zebras, warthogs, colobus monkeys and giraffes, giving you an excellent safari experience with lots of chances to spot some local wildlife.
Stone Town
Stone Town, located in Zanzibar off the coast of Tanzania, is another UNESCO World Heritage Site that can’t be missed! Once the prosperous centre of the spice trade, Stone Town has, in many ways, been frozen in time. It’s filled with winding streets, exotic bazaars, and colonial-era buildings. Walking through Stone Town is a treat for all the senses; the heady smell of spices that fills the air, combined with the sound of market hawkers selling their brightly coloured wares is enough to take you back to Stone Town’s ancient origins.
