Spotted on Safari – Pink Flamingos!

In this week’s ‘Spotted on Safari’ we are focusing on flamingos as we have been sent some lovely images and a video clip by our fantastic Somak Driver Guides, Dan, Joseph and Samuel.

Flamingos are primarily water birds and are mostly found around lagoons or lakes. In Kenya, the two main places to spot flamingos are Lake Nakuru and Lake Bogoria. Both lakes have an abundance of algae that attracts these birds that famously line the shore.

There are two types of flamingo – the Lesser flamingo, which can be identified by its deep red carmine bill and pink plumage, and the Greater flamingo, which has a black tip on its bill. When you see flocks of flamingos they are most likely the Lesser flamingos and these are also the ones mainly featured in wildlife documentaries.

Lake Bogoria is abundant in Flamingos at the moment, and our driver guide Dan captured some amazing images of these fantastic birds. The birds tend to migrate here from Lake Nakuru as well as some Tanzanian lakes. This attracts so many visitors, keen to witness this phenomenal spectacle.

Driver guide Samuel Adoyo captured almost half a million flamingos at Lake Bogoria in this clip – we hope you enjoy watching it, and can see why it is such a popular spot to see these spectacular birds.

Meanwhile Joseph was at Lake Nakuru, one of the Rift Valley soda lakes, which also has plenty of flamingos lining its shores. This was famous for flamingos but in recent years the flamingos have been flocking to Lake Bogoria which has ample supply of the algae that they feed on.
