South African Treasures

Augrabies Falls National Park

Augrabies Falls National Park

South Africa is home to some of the most incredible safari experiences Africa has to offer, from Kruger National Park to Table Mountain National Park. With all this nature around, you’ll be spoilt for choice. But South Africa also has a whole host of unique and exciting places that are off the beaten track. Here are some of our favourite South African treasures that you should visit the next time you find yourself in this incredibly diverse country.

The Augrabies Falls National Park is often overlooked because it doesn’t play host to the Big Five, but it has a unique and diverse ecosystem all of its own and it’s well worth a visit. The waterfall is incredible to behold, thundering 60 metres into a gorge below. As well as the waterfall, you can also see the Moon Rock, which provides stunning panoramic views of the landscape, and the Kokerboom, from which branches were taken by the Bushmen to make quivers for their arrows. For a truly magical experience, stay until the sun goes down, to stargaze and witness the wonders of the galaxy.

Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site

Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site, South Africa

Cradle of Humankind

Just over an hour’s drive from Johannesburg, the Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site contains some of the most significant human fossils found in South Africa. As well as this, there are the Sterkfontein caves, which are some of the main fossil sites, and the Wondercave, the 3rd largest chamber in South Africa. Be sure to also visit the Maropeng visitor centre to see the exhibition on human development.

Stanford

Stanford Village, South Africa

Stanford Village

Lesser known than some of the other towns close by, like Hermanus, Stanford is a small laid back village with a lot to offer. Located on the banks of the Klein River, you’ll never be far away from nature. With over 200 bird species to spot, you can bird watch at your leisure. There are also river cruises available, as well as kayaking and horse riding activities. If you enjoy drinking wine, you can take part in one of the many wine-tasting sessions at the local estates in the area. The village also has a range of adorable cafes, excellent restaurants, and treasure-filled antique shops for you to explore. Whatever you do, you’re sure to be entranced by Stanford’s relaxed atmosphere.

Sani Pass

Sani Pass, Lesotho

Sani Pass

Adventuring up to Sani Pass, high in the mountain range of Lesotho, will definitely awaken the daredevil in you. At an altitude of 2876 metres, the steep road can only be traversed with a 4×4 vehicle. Be prepared for bumpy roads, sharp turns, and sheer drops – just don’t look down! But if you make it to the top, you’ll be rewarded with spectacular views across the valley and the surrounding mountains.

The Otter Trail

The Otter Trail, South Africa

The Otter Trail

This five-day long walking trail starts at the Storms River Mouth and ends at Nature’s Valley. Set along the edge of the Garden Route, you’ll be treated to some of the most diverse nature South Africa has to offer, which makes for some of the best hiking you can do in the country. As its name suggests, the trail is home to the Cape Clawless Otter. If you’re lucky, you’ll be able to see these energetic creatures playing offshore. After a day of hiking, you can spend the evening in one of the huts along the trail, surrounded by lush vegetation and pure peace.
