African Safari Diaries – Honeymooning in Kenya and Zanzibar

For their honeymoon, Malcolm and Gemma recently visited Kenya, and chose to go on an exhilarating safari, as well as spend time in Zanzibar on a relaxing beach break. They shared their experience and some wonderful photos with us.

Was this your first time visiting Kenya and Zanzibar? What made you decide to visit?

Yes this was our first visit to Africa, we chose it for our Honeymoon as a safari was something we both had always wanted to do.

How did you choose your itinerary?

We looked at the various Somak options and the Cheetah Safari with the various amazing looking camps, culminating in the Masai Mara, looked perfect. We then chose to follow this with a week of complete relaxation in Zanzibar.

Where did you stay whilst on your trip and what was your favourite property and place?

The itinerary included Aberdares Country Club, Ashnil Samburu Camp, Serena Mountain Lodge, Lake Naivasha Sopa Lodge, and Ashnil Mara Camp.

Our favourite place was Ashnil Samburu. It was just an amazing experience being in and around the animals, the monkeys in particular, great accommodation and the the food was outstanding.

What were the highlights from your trip?

Every camp was unique and had its own experiences, seeing something new everyday. In Samburu we were drinking beer with baboons, then having a quiet lunch when a huge majestic elephant strolled past, then Gemma played peek a boo with a monkey under a sun bed.

Then there’s the Mara and the big cats, we were lucky enough to see a family of lions, a leopard with its kill up a tree, and on the last day a beautiful cheetah.

We went whilst the great migration was happening and witnessed the Mara painted black as the Masai call it.

There are just too many highlights to mention them all.

Do you have any advice or tips for anyone thinking of going to Kenya or Zanzibar for a holiday?

Don’t overthink the clothing needed, just take sensible comfortable clothing, and pack a good insect repellent, a good camera to capture those once in a lifetime memories, because there will be many, and binoculars so you don’t miss any of those special moments.

What were your special memories from this trip?

At the Equator

To say we have seen the ‘big 5’ will live with us forever, the balloon trip over the Masai Mara was just out of this world, and the scientific explanation of the Equator just blew our minds.

The friendliness of the people, the amazing food, and the whole African experience is all we could have dreamed of.

Cheers!

We will forever miss hearing ‘Jambo’ and ‘Hakuna Matata’ all day everyday.
