African Safari Diaries: A fantastic safari experience in Kenya
Danny and Mie recently visited Kenya, opting to go on a safari followed by a relaxing break in Mombasa. Danny has shared his experience and some wonderful photos from his holiday with us. We hope you enjoy reading about his trip!
1. Was this your first time visiting Kenya? What made you decide to visit?
It was my second time visiting Kenya. I had visited the country in 2001 for a safari with my family. It was the first visit to Kenya for my girlfriend, Mie. We wanted to go on safari and I recommended Kenya as a good country for that purpose.
2. How did you choose your itinerary?
We booked the holiday through the Danish travel company Safari Eksperten. We bought a standard package with stays at several safari lodges.
3. Where did you stay whilst on your trip and what was your favourite property and place?
During our seven days travel we stayed at Aberdare Country Club, Ashnil Samburu Camp (two nights), Serena Mountain Lodge, Lake Naivasha Sopa Lodge and Ashnil Mara Camp (two nights). All the lodges were wonderful places, but I would especially recommend Ashnil Samburu Camp.
Mountain Lodge was an incredible place, but the number of animals was greatest in the Samburu and Masai Mara parks.
4. What were the highlights and special memories from your trip?
I can highly recommend all the places but I liked the Masai Mara the most. We had some really good experiences at this national reserve with lions and cheetahs, both of whom had a number of youngsters playing around and having fun. We also liked the big groups of elephants and giraffes, just to name some of the great animals that we saw.
Besides this, the sunsets were absolutely stunning.
5. Do you have any advice or tips for anyone thinking of going to Kenya for a holiday?
If you want to have a fantastic safari experience then travel to Kenya. There is a lot of travel by car/jeep, so maybe taking a flight between some of the parks will be a good solution if you want to avoid bumpy and dusty roads. But by car you will get to see a lot of the local people and nature around the country.
After our one week safari we flew from Nairobi to Mombasa for five days relaxing by the beach and enjoying the swimming pool. We think that was a great finish to our vacation.
