African Safari Diaries : A Porini Camps Safari Experience

We are delighted to share Sian’s highlights and some fantastic photos of her most recent trip to Kenya with her mother for a safari, which they booked after receiving an email about our Porini Camps Safari experience in Amboseli and the world -renowned Masai Mara. Sian has an affiliation with Kenya, having been born there, and has returned a few times for safaris.

1. Was this your first time visiting Kenya? What made you decide to visit?

Lion in Kenya

My parents lived in Kenya in the early 1970’s (my Dad was a teacher at Lenana School) and I was born in Kenya. We left Kenya when I was just a toddler and I don’t have any memories of this time. My first trip back to Kenya was in 2014; my mother and I decided on a safari together. We have since visited in 2015 and our recent trip in 2019.

2. How did you choose your itinerary and who did you book with?

My mother had an email from Somak Holidays advertising the Porini Camps experience in Amboseli and the Mara. We booked through Meeta Tailor, as with our previous safaris.

3. Where did you stay whilst on your trip and what was your favourite property and place?

We stayed at Porini Amboseli Camp, Porini Mara Camp and Porini Lion Camp. Our favourite was Porini Mara Camp at Ol Kinyei. We thought this was a lovely camp in terms of location, comfort and brilliant game viewing.

4. What were your highlights from your trip?

Four Cheetahs on the savannah

Seeing a cheetah with her four semi-adult cubs on a fresh kill and being within close proximity to a leopard for approximately an hour.

The sundowners at the 3 camps were a memory to treasure especially whilst watching lion cubs playing one evening.

5. Do you have any advice or tips for anyone thinking of going on a Safari?

We would recommend tented camps on the conservancies, which are quieter than the main lodges on the game reserves, and to appreciate whatever you see.
