African Safari Diaries : Raghu’s Kenyan Safari

In this edition of “African Safari Diaries” we speak to Raghu Kalra, who recently visited Kenya with his family for a safari holiday and enjoyed game drives in several game parks.

1. Was this your first time visiting Kenya/Africa? What made you choose to visit?

This was my first time visiting Africa.  Some of my work colleagues had visited Kenya previously and were full of praise both for Kenya and Somak Holidays. Coming from a family of wildlife enthusiasts, none of us could wait to arrive in Kenya.

2. What was your itinerary?

We arrived in Kenya on the 23rd of June and spent our first day visiting the Giraffe Centre and Museum in Nairobi and concluded our day with a delicious meal at Carnivore. The next day we travelled to the Masai Mara and stayed there for a couple of days.

We saw a whole bunch of lions, elephants, giraffes, zebras, hyenas, cheetahs, wild buffaloes and many other small birds and animals during our stay there.

After that we travelled to Lake Naivasha where we enjoyed a boat ride and we saw many hippos and a variety of birds.

Our last stop was Sweetwaters Serena camp where we spent late afternoon and the evening in this beautiful camp. During our safari drive we got a chance to see a few more lions, rhinos, elephants and wild buffaloes.

3. Where did you stay whilst on your Safaris and what was your favorite property?

We stayed at the Tamarind Tree Hotel in Nairobi, at Keekorok Lodge in the Masai Mara, Lake Naivasha Sopa Lodge and the Sweetwaters Serena Camp.

Sweetwaters was by far the best for all the facilities that they offered, the cozy environment and of course the great food!

4. What were your highlights from your trip?

Hippos, giraffes and zebras roaming on the lawns in front of our rooms at both Masai Mara and Lake Naivasha.

5. Do you have any advice or tips for anyone thinking of going on a Safari?

My advice would be to stay in each location for at least two days to get the best experience. Unfortunately due to having limited time we could not do it ourselves.
