The best places to see Tigers in India
Tigers are the largest members of the cat family and are renowned for their power and strength. India is one of the best places to see the majestic Bengal tigers in the wild as seventy per cent of the world’s tigers live in over 50 tiger reserves, established since the 1970s.
Tigers are elusive and territorial animals and require lots of space. They are also really alert, active, dominant, yet have a very private nature!
The best way to increase your chances of seeing tigers in one of India’s National Parks is with the help of expert local guides, who have years of experience, and we recommend spending at least 3-4 days in the National Park.
Some of the best places to see the tigers are:
Ranthambore National Park
Ranthambore was declared a game sanctuary in 1955 and it became a national park in 1980. In years gone by the Maharajah of Jaipur used it as a hunting ground. The national park is located between the Aravali and Vindhya mountain ranges and its forests were once part of the jungles of central India.
The tigers which roam the park are the main attraction, and Ranthambore offers some of the best opportunities to see these magnificent animals in their natural surroundings, along with many other animal species. The terrain is rugged and there are rocky ridges, hills and open valleys with lakes and pools, plus remnants of the 10th century fortress from which the park takes its name.
Kanha National Park
In the middle of India, in Madhya Pradesh, Kanha National Park is a natural mix of grassy plateaus, open plains and bamboo forests. About a hundred tigers live here, and along with the leopard, they are the main predator. The forests are also home to the rare swamp deer as well as the sambhar, chital, monkeys and mongoose.
Bandhavgarh National Park
Bandhavgarh, in Madhya Pradesh state, is much drier than some of the other parks. It has a massive rocky outcrop and Bandhavgarh Fort at its centre, thought to be 2000 years old. Around these lie rocks and ruins, caves and chasms, home to a range of wonderful wildlife.
Pench National Park
Pench is the park that inspired Rudyard Kipling to write the much loved book, The Jungle Book. It is often offered as an optional extra on tiger safaris, as the tigers are less visible here, however, leopards are also an attraction. This park is also a bird lovers’ paradise with over 250 species spotted around the park’s reservoir.
