Kenya
Born Free by Joy Adamson
Born Free by Joy Adamson, details Joy and her husband’s efforts to raise and rehabilitate lions in Kenya in the mid-20th century, with a particular focus on a lioness called Elsa.
We love this book as we support The Born Free Foundation, set up by actress Virginia McKenna who starred as Joy in the film Born Free based on the book, and her son Will Travers.
The Born Free Foundation has also published a children’s version of this book, making it a great introduction for kids if you are planning on taking them on safari for the first time.

Long Walk to Freedom by Nelson Mandela
The riveting autobiography of the iconic South African president, Nelson Mandela. Read about his early life, coming of age, education and 27 years in prison (where he wrote part of his autobiography in secret). A compelling read, it paints a vivid picture of the extraordinary life of hardship and fortitude lead by Mandela on his quest for freedom in South Africa.
When you visit South Africa, we recommend the Nelson Mandela capture site in Howick. The sculpture at the site is a must see which comprises 50 steel columns that are between six and 9.5 metres in height and cover a width of almost 30 metres. These have been cut by laser to form an image of the former president which can be viewed as you walk towards it, representing the long walk to freedom that he took towards his goal of political equality.
