negombo
One of Sri Lanka's most popular beach resorts, Negombo boasts a wide shoreline and a buzzing nightlife scene making it perfect for couples and families alike.
Negombo was amongst the first of the island's cities to be taken by the Portuguese in the 16th century - the catalyst for the area's Christian persuasion. It was the arrival of the Dutch, who took advantage of its coastal location, that turned the town into a commercial centre.
Besides tourism, Negombo's economy relies heavily on the fishing industry. The ocean on its doorstep provides an abundance of fish including tuna, while the picturesque lagoon is considered the source of the finest shellfish in Sri Lanka. It is unsurprising, then, that the seafood here is so very good.
Chic, modern resorts define the hotel scene in Negombo, with many looking out over the palm-fringed coastline or bordering the lagoon. Many offer the opportunity to enjoy watersports and diving. Alternatively, nearby Wilpattu National Park, is home to elephants, leopards and sloth bears.
