Top excursions in Nairobi, Kenya
A cosmopolitan capital of fabulous food and striking administrative architecture, Nairobi is the city where wildlife and modernity meet, and is much more than a safari starting point.
Nairobi is unique as it boasts a National Park a hippo’s roar away from the city centre. Black rhinoceros are the star attraction, but wildlife enthusiasts are spoilt too with gazelles, zebras and giraffes as well as lions and leopards. Home to over 400 species of birds, the park is almost as cosmopolitan as the city itself.
Nairobi is the gateway to explore Kenya and will captivate any adventure seeker. Here are a few things to do and places to visit.
Excursions
David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust
David Sheldrick’s Elephant Orphanage is located in the Nairobi Game Park, and it is here that baby elephants and rhinos are rehabilitated and introduced back into the wild. The centre, located just outside the Nairobi National Park, cares for young abandoned animals and is a place where visitors can see the orphaned babies being fed and taking their daily mud bath.
Giraffe Centre Excursion
Where else in the world can you not only see, stroke and take the perfect selfie up close and personal with a giraffe, but also kiss them? The Giraffe Centre in Karen is a haven for protected, nurtured and happy giraffes, providing tourists with an opportunity to learn about these fascinating creatures and get up face-to-face with them. Learn more about giraffes, feed them and then take some time to walk the 1.5-kilometre nature trail. Keep your eyes peeled for smaller animals such as dik-dik and squirrel, and see how many species of birds you can spot, of which there will likely be many.
Karen Blixen Museum
Drive towards the Ngong Hills and through small villages to the Karen Blixen Museum – the house that for many years was her home. This museum tells the story of the colonial era in Kenya, through the eyes of the Danish author. Her memoirs tell of the events that took place in the years 1917 to 1931 and were made famous by the movie, ‘Out of Africa’
