Harry and Meghan’s Botswana – why this country is so special

Prince Harry and Megan

The happy couple

The recent news of Prince Harry and Meghan Markel’s engagement has delighted the British nation. In an interview, the happy couple gushed about their love for the African country to which the Prince took Meghan for their third date, and where they camped out under the stars by the sparkling Boteti River. It’s indeed romantic. Now their recent engagement has put the magnificent Meno A Kwena safari camp on the map.

Botswana is a beautiful country and certainly one of the most vaunted safari destinations in Africa. Characterised by an abundance of wildlife and fascinating local tribal culture, this is the place to come for an exotic safari adventure or to celebrate a special occasion (or simply to impress someone on a third date). Here are three of our favourite Botswana treasures for you to explore:

Chobe National Park

As Botswana’s first national park, Chobe can’t be missed from any intrepid itinerary. The ecosystem is incredibly diverse, with four main areas providing the perfect habitat for a range of animals from giraffes and zebras to lions and leopards. One of the biggest draws to the national park is the impressive elephant population; over 50,000 of these gentle beasts roam the vast plains. You’ll also be able to spot a plethora of bird life, with over 450 species living in the area.

As well as traditional game drives, Chobe National Park offers stunning sunset cruises where you find many hippo and crocodiles in their natural habitat: the Chobe River. Our popular three-day Chobe National Park itinerary combines this wild park with a visit to Victoria Falls.

Okavango Delta

The Okavango Delta is both a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Africa’s Seven Natural Wonders. These accolades are well deserved as the Delta is visually extraordinary and boasts bountiful wildlife, from the classic Big Five (elephants, rhinoceros, buffalo, lions and leopards) to 450 species of birds and 89 fish species.

Okavango Delta

The best way to see the Delta is on a boat safari. For something more intimate, head out on the water in a traditional mokoro canoe with an expert guide. Wings Over the Delta is one of the best holiday itineraries in the Okavango Delta. This 4-night safari adventure that sees you visiting two fantastic lodges in the Delta – of course we can also tailor this itinerary to your exact requirements.

Makgadikgadi Pans and Kalahari Desert

Makgadikgadi Pans

Makgadikgadi Pans

The Makgadikgadi Pans, one of the largest salt flats in the world, are the remains of an ancient lake that dried up more than a thousand years ago. Today, the salt deposits glisten in the Botswana sun, providing an ideal backdrop for spotting the animals that live in the area, such as Africa’s largest population of zebras, as well as pelicans, flamingos, and other bird species. With the Kalahari Desert nearby, you’ll also have the chance to see meerkats, hyenas and the Kalahari lion. The 10-night Desert & Delta trip highlights the best places in Botswana, including the iconic Chobe, Makgadikgadi, Victoria Falls, and other interesting sites such as Savute Marsh.
