Celebrate The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee With a Safari Fit For Royalty

70 years ago, in 1952 Princess Elizabeth, aged 25, was visiting Kenya with her husband, Prince Philip, when her father, king George VI, died aged 56 on February 6th, meaning she became Queen. They were staying at Treetops (now closed) at the time, which was a popular lodge for wealthy and intrepid visitors and overlooked a watering hole from its position in a giant fig tree.

In its day, there wasn’t really anything like it and some of the Queen’s fond memories of her stay included spotting a large herd of elephants (around 40) at the watering hole along with baboons and waterbuck.

There is no better way to celebrate The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee than with a safari fit for royalty! Here are some wonderful lodges where you can experience the same thrill she did 70 years ago!

Located high above the floor of Africa’s Great Rift Valley, Angama Mara overlooks Kenya’s Masai Mara, considered by many to be the loveliest game reserve on the continent. Enjoy a convenient private airfield, wonderful tailor-made safari days, and a famously warm Kenyan welcome. Here you can be as active or as relaxed as you wish – early morning balloon flights over the Mara, escorted walking safaris, game drives, visits to neighbouring Masai villages, or just sit in one of the rocking chairs on your tent’s deck and watch the wildlife pass by, or have a totally relaxing massage.
