African Safari Diaries: A wonderful safari holiday in Kenya

In this week’s African Safari Diaries we are thrilled to share Mr Anthony and Mrs Gillian Allen’s experience alongside their friend Helen, in Kenya. We hope you enjoy it, especially seeing all their fantastic photos, courtesy of Helen.

1. What made you choose to go on an African Safari?  Was this your first time visiting Kenya and going on safari?

This was our 6th trip to Kenya and 5th with Somak Holidays. I really rate Somak’s service and itineraries and I was first recommended Somak Holidays by my sister. I am drawn back to Kenya by the wildlife, and having been to Tanzania once before, I think Kenya is better for safaris as you can get much closer to the animals.

2. What did your itinerary involve?

We stayed at Ashnil Samburu, Sweetwaters Serena Camp, Lake Naivasha Sopa, Mara Serena and Nairobi Serena on this trip, and we personalised this itinerary to our preferences.

3. What was your favourite property?
Sweetwaters Serena Camp was by far my favourite out of all the properties and I recommend a stay here for 2 nights and not 1. I particularly enjoyed seeing the chimps and rhinos.
My friend Helen who accompanied us on this trip loved Ashnil Samburu. We got the most personalised service at Ashnil Samburu and were even given a cake, which was a really lovely gesture.

4. What were your highlights from your trip?

Our driver guide Clide was fantastic and went above and beyond for us. We really enjoyed our time with him, and he was really knowledgeable.

I recommend that anyone going to Serena Mara should do the hippo breakfast as it was such a highlight for us and I feel it is something everyone would definitely enjoy.

We managed to see 53 lions on this trip and by far saw the best game on this trip than any previous safaris over the years. We felt that this trip was better than all our previous trips.

In addition we also saw over 20 rhinos and there is a new rhino conservancy between Sweetwaters and Nakuru, which is protected, but you can still see the rhinos.

5.  What was your experience with Somak Holidays like? Would you book with us again?

I am so happy with Somak Holidays that I am already planning an India trip for the new year to celebrate my wife’s 60th birthday. I am particularly keen to go to Kerala, as well as hoping to see some tigers on the trip.

Having travelled on various itineraries over the past few years, I personally would probably only choose safari options and I prefer a longer safari. I had once done a 5-day safari which I felt was too short and intense. On my next trip I am aiming for 8-10 days and hoping to time it with the migration, and I definitely want to stay at Ashnil Mara.
