A Traveller’s Guide to Mauritius’ Pristine White Beaches
Mauritius is famed for several things, from its culture to its delicious food, but nothing stands out more than its incredible and breathtaking beaches. Here are a few of the best ones you need to visit.
Le Morne
There are very few beaches more magical than Le Morne. With white sandy dunes, gorgeous trees, and water that almost looks too good to be true, Le Morne is one of the most popular beaches on the island. Plus, it has a nearby airstrip that allows you to fly in on a private jet charter easily if you want to add that extra touch of luxury. The UNESCO World Heritage site is ideal for families and watersports, and with a couple of cafes nearby, you can easily relax your day away.
Flic en Flac
With one of the best beach names ever and perfect for some fun in the sun, Flic en Flac, found on the West Coast of the island, is a must-stop for families and water sports enthusiasts alike. The calm waters are great for swimming and snorkelling, and if you get there early enough, you can also snag a couple of beach chairs right on the water. The reef-protected lagoon is incredibly popular with locals and visitors, even on days with not the best beach weather.
Trou aux Biches
Trou aux Biches is a former fishing village that has transformed into a seaside town. With one of the most picturesque beaches in Mauritius, the one-mile-long stretch offers everything from paddle boarding to seaside drinks and delicious local food.
While relatively small, Trou aux Biches has everything you need for an unforgettable beach day. The water is perfect for snorkelling and swimming; you can sail, and if you feel extra adventurous, you can even explore the depths in a submarine.
Poste Lafayette
Poste Lafayette is a hidden Mauritian gem in the southeast of the island. The slight stretch of gorgeous white sand is surrounded by ancient volcanic rock and nature, with the water reflecting the wild nature of the area.
While the sea gets a bit rough here and isn’t great for weak swimmers, the area’s biggest draw is how quiet it is compared to other beaches. It is mainly popular with kitesurfers, and considering they spend most of their time on the water, you can easily enjoy a relatively private time on the sand.
Blue Bay Beach
Found in the Blue Bay Marine Park, Blue Bay Beach is an idyllic and tranquil stretch of pristine white sand combined with amazing views, beachside cabanas, and tons of wildlife to discover. Considering it is a protected site, the area is relatively untouched besides the few amenities that make a day there convenient and comfortable. The beautiful reef found just offshore is perfect for snorkelling or glass-bottom boat tours.
Belle Mare Beach
Found on the east coast of Mauritius, Belle Mare Beach looks like something off of a postcard. Crystal clear water and the softest white sand you have ever felt is the order of the day, with hundreds of palm trees providing shade along the entire stretch of beach. What sets Belle Mare apart is its simplicity; you won’t find many luxurious bells and whistles, but you will find a space that gets you in touch with nature and will make you feel secluded even when surrounded by people.
St Felix Beach
Found on the south coast of the island, St Felix Beach is another spot that has remained reasonably untouched and still dominated by nature. Rocky cliffs, powdery sand, and crashing waves give you a sense of wild freedom you can’t find in many other places. St. Felix is undoubtedly not the best place for swimming, as powerful currents can quickly sweep you away. However, if you are a nature lover or enjoy long walks on the beach, you’re in luck.
Ile aux Cerfs
Found on a tiny island of the same name off the east coast of Mauritius, Ile aux Cerfs is the definition of secluded tranquillity. The 700-acre island features several pristine beaches, an 18-hole golf course, quaint restaurants, and charming souvenir stores.
If you want a truly unique experience, you can take a speedboat tour along the Grande Riviere Sud-Est. With ancient boulders strewn everywhere and the trip ending at the beautiful Beau Champ waterfalls, it is an experience that can’t be missed.
Gris Gris Beach
The beauty of Gris Gris Beach is its sparse tranquillity. Beloved for its simplicity and how humans have barely changed it, this is an idyllic haven. Rugged hills and trees surround the beach, and although it may be small, considering there will be many times when you are the only one on the beach, the peace and relaxation you will feel is almost unmatched.
Life’s a Beach
Mauritius is still one of the most underrated beach spots in the world, and considering the plethora of options it has, it should quickly make its way up to the top of your holiday destination list.
