African Safari Diaries: The Gates’ Safari in Kenya
Alison and her husband Alan recently went to Kenya and did our signature Cheetah Safari, spending time first in Samburu, home to unique wildlife, followed by the Rift Valley Lakes and the Masai Mara. They had previously experienced a self drive safari in South Africa and really enjoyed being driven this time in Kenya!
1. What made you choose to go on an African Safari? Was this your first time visiting Kenya and going on safari?
Previously we had been on Safari to the Kruger National Park but on a self drive self catering basis.
We wanted to go to Kenya but also we wanted more relaxation away from driving and cooking.
2. How did you hear about Somak Holidays?
I picked up two holiday brochures from the travel agent and Somak’s packages were the best value for money, offering everything we wanted.
3. Where did you stay whilst on your Safari and what was your favourite property?
We stayed at Aberdares Country Club for one night. The setting was stunning the staff wonderful and the food was of high quality.
Our next two nights were in Samburu staying at Samburu Sopa Lodge which again was lovely.
Samburu has unique animals that you won’t see anywhere else, the Reticulated Giraffe being one!
Next night onto Serena Mountain Lodge which was just amazing , with the water hole outside of our window.
The next day we moved to Nakuru National Park and then onto Lake Naivasha where we went on a boat ride and oh my this was fun! But I admit I was a little scared being so close to a Hippo but the boat driver does this everyday and he knew how close he could get without upsetting the hippos.
Finally, after this we visited a Masai village, which I would highly recommend and from here it was into the Masai Mara.
4. What were your highlights or special moments from your trip?
The Mara did not disappoint it was amazing if not challenging for our driver due to the wet muddy roads caused by heavy rain the week before.
I would recommend Kenya to anyone as it has friendly people and the standard of accommodation and food make it a great holiday.
5. Any advice or tips for anyone thinking of going on a Safari?
My tip for other travellers is to be prepared for lots of travelling on some bumpy roads but it is oh so worth it!
