Situated in the heart of Southern Africa, Botswana is a country of
unimaginable beauty and undoubtedly one of the greatest safari destinations
for spotting wildlife against a backdrop of true wilderness.
The most accessible destination is the Chobe National Park, offering some of
the most reliable big game viewing in a bush environment. The national park
flanks the banks of the Chobe River where you can slow the pace on a river
cruise or houseboat, observing the large elephant herds the area is famed for.
The Okavango Delta lies deep in northern Botswana, and starts life as
floodwater falling over Angola’s highlands before trickling through the delta
and slowly filling the sparkling channels and backwaters. This unique habitat
is an oasis for animals and birds. The landscape is best experienced by gliding
through the hippo-carved channels in a mokoro, a traditional canoe.
Above the Okavango Delta lies the exclusive private concessions of the
Linyanti, which have become famous for being one of the best places in
Africa to spot the endangered wild dog.
In complete contrast to the Okavango are the Makgadikgadi Salt Pans and the
Kalahari Desert. The arid grasslands of the central Kalahari offer the
opportunity to spot desert-adapted species plus the famous black-maned
Kalahari lions and other predators such as cheetah and the rare brown hyena.
The Makgadikgadi Salt Pans is a unique landscape of blinding white salt flats
stretching to all horizons. This area is best explored on quad bike with pans
sleep outs providing truly memorable sunrises and sunsets in an area
uninhabitable by wildlife. Visits to meerkats on the edges of the pans and
wildlife viewing in the surrounding grasslands, through which Africa’s second
largest zebra and wildebeest migration passes (seasonal) are also possible, as
well as cultural visits to the san bushmen.
