33 www.somak.co.uk Periyar National Park Periyar National Park & Wildlife Sanctuary is a protected area of over 950km 2 . The Park is home to elephants and tigers, as well as a host of amazing views across grassland, lakes, and forests. It is possible to enjoy the scenery from a boat on the lake, as well as viewing more than 266 species of birds and 160 butterflies, including the Southern Birdwing. Ooty Ooty, officially known as Udhagamandalam, is one of the best-known Tamil hill stations. Ooty is home to a mixture of eucalyptus and pine forests, as well as numerous coffee and tea plantations. The latter was encouraged by the British colonisation, when activities at the time were split between traditional hunting and the “new” sports of tennis and golf.
