21 www.somak.co.uk Varanasi The holy city of Varanasi, situated on the banks of the sacred River Ganges, is one of the world’s oldest cities and has been a cultural centre in India for several thousand years. In the Hindu faith it is believed that bathing in the river will purge all sins and Varanasi is generally regarded as a place of salvation and enlightenment. The ghats (ceremonial steps) offer a glimpse into the city’s spiritual significance. A visit to Varanasi is as rewarding as it is exciting. Amritsar Amritsar is a vibrant and frenetic glimpse into India’s rich Sikh history. Most famous for the magnificent Golden Temple – Sikhism’s holiest shrine, and one of India’s most disarming sights – Amritsar also houses the Jallianwala Bagh memorial, which commemorates the 1919 massacre by the British. The carefully choreographed Sunset Retreat ceremony at the Wagah border, which separates India and Pakistan, is a unique experience worth including – and a welcome break from the sights and sounds of the chaotic old city bazaars.
