51 www.somak.co.uk Day 1 Thursday Fly from the UK overnight to Cape Town via Addis Ababa on Ethiopian Airlines. Days 2 – 4 Friday-Sunday Cape Town Met on arrival and transferred to your hotel for the next 3 nights at leisure. Excursions available (see page 49). Overnight: Protea Hotel by Marriott Cape Town Sea Point. (b) Day 5 Monday Prince Albert After breakfast, commence on your group departure for the Garden Route. Travel through the picturesque Hex River Valley, surrounded by magnificent mountains. This area is considered to be the biggest producer of table grapes in South Africa. Continue to Matjiesfontein, where a part of the local hotel served as a convalescent hospital for British officers during the Anglo- Boer War. The entire village was declared a National Heritage Site in 1975 and is today a charming, beautifully restored throwback to the late Victorian era. The journey continues to Prince Albert, another delightful village, dating back to 1762. The town is known for its sun- ripened fresh and dried fruit, vineyards, olives and local cheese. Overnight: Swartberg Hotel or similar. (b) Day 6 Tuesday Oudtshoorn After breakfast (time permitting), you will have the opportunity to sample some of the locally produced olives before travelling through the spectacular Meiringspoort Pass and Waterfall, part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with breathtaking rock formations and jaw-dropping beauty. Wind through the Swartberg Mountains to the quaint Little Karoo village of De Rust. Continue to Oudtshoorn, the ostrich capital of the world and home to the spectacular limestone caverns of the Cango Caves. Enjoy a wine tasting at a local wine estate before setting off on a tour of the Cango Caves. Afternoon, visit an Ostrich Farm for a guided tour. Overnight: La Plume Guest House or similar. (b,d) Day 7 Wednesday Knysna Depart after breakfast, travel over the Outeniqua Pass to George, the sixth oldest town in South Africa, with many historical landmarks like the Slave Tree and King Edward VII Library building. Continue via Wilderness, to Knysna, known as the oyster box of South Africa, nestling on the banks of a beautiful lagoon in the heart of the Garden Route. Enjoy a lagoon cruise to the Featherbed Nature Reserve, where you can take a trailer ride to the top of the Western Head to enjoy views of the town and lagoon, returning for lunch under the milkwood trees. Afternoon at leisure to further explore this charming town set around a natural harbour lagoon. Overnight: Rex Hotel or similar. (b,l) Day 8 Thursday Port Elizabeth After breakfast, head eastwards along the Tsitsikamma Forest to Port Elizabeth, known as the 'friendly city', with a wonderful climate. The tour ends on arrival. Rest of the day is at leisure. Overnight: The Beach Hotel. (b) Days 9 – 10 Eastern Cape After breakfast depart for the Addo Elephant National Park. Stay for the next 2 nights at the Kuzuko Lodge, which is situated on the malaria–free private concession of the Addo Elephant National Park. Your stay includes all return transfers, a welcome drink on arrival, light finger lunch, 4-course dinner, early-bird tea or coffee, breakfast and two activities per full day. Daily activities include: Morning and afternoon game drives. From 1 January to 30 April and 1 September to 31 December you can visit the Bushman Paintings Exploration walk instead of a morning or afternoon game drive. Day 11 Depart Transfer to Port Elizabeth Airport where you will connect for your flight either to Johannesburg or Cape Town and your onward connection with Ethiopian Airlines back to the UK via Addis Ababa.
