Africa 2019-21 Brochure

www.somak.co.uk 9 We are a family-run company born in Kenya, and for the last 50 years our traditional values have defined our growth, our goals, and our sense of responsibility for the beautiful continent we share with our guests. Sustainability, long-term investment, and a proactive attitude toward conservation have been central to our 50-year story. Somak’s mission is to remain Africa’s most respected safari experts, but we understand that’s founded on so much more than just providing the best holidays. The African continent faces numerous social, economic and environmental challenges, and therefore so do we. Our strict ‘No Hunting Holidays’ policy means our guests exclusively shoot the ‘big 5’ with a camera lens, respecting, not destroying Africa’s wildlife. Our operations on the ground employ hundreds of local workers, boosting the regional economy. We’re also partnered with a range of charities and community projects we’re proud to support and work closely with. Somak Cares Ashnil Mara & the International Elephant Walk: T he entire Somak group are committed to ensuring that the only place we see ivory is on elephants. OUR MISSION & THE FUTURE We love sharing this truly special continent, reminding our guests of the immense beauty of a natural world we sometimes forget. However, it’s no longer a world apart, and for so many travellers now, understanding the current and future relationship between humans and nature is an eye-opening experience as rewarding as the safari itself. Our African driver- guide team’s resumé includes time with the Kenya Wildlife Service and the African Fund for Endangered Wildlife. Our properties include some of the continent’s most sustainable and advanced lodges. We care about the long-term sustainability of Africa’s natural riches, and we’re committed to its future. Amref Health Africa b uilds African solutions to African problems. Funding and promoting better healthcare and healthcare infrastructure, Amref flying doctors cover is complimentary with every Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda and Uganda Somak booking. The Born Free Foundation i s committed to conservation, working to reduce human-wildlife conflict through projects such as lion-proofing bomas to protect and save the lives of both lions and livestock in Kenya. The Loigero Primary School: the beating heart of the local community in which Somak's sister company, Ashnil Hotels, built its Ashnil Mara property, has flourished ever since. Giving back to this community, particularly through education and investment in future generations, is something we see as our pleasure and responsibility. Tusk, since 1990, has invested over £25,000,000 into a wide range of projects across education, conservation and development to link Africa’s natural heritage with its cultures and people, alleviating poaching and habitat loss pressures on wildlife. We could not be more proud of our commitment to this goal.
