It is home to an abundance of wildlife including the 'big 5’. The Masai Mara also plays host to the incredible spectacle of the annual wildebeest migration. The area has an amazing concentration of wildlife, particularly when the migratory wildebeest and zebras are grazing on the lush plains from July to October. Wildlife wanders freely between the national reserve and the private conservancies, with each area offering a different safari experience. The Masai Mara National Reserve The Reserve, which borders Tanzania, is the key place to view the world-famous wildebeest migration, and has an amazing concentration of wildlife. The Mara River, which runs north to south through the reserve, separates the west area of the reserve known as the Mara Triangle, from the east. As these two areas are separate, they are administered differently, and park fees may be required for each if you choose to visit them both. Private Conservancies Surrounding the Masai Mara National Reserve are a number of private conservancies of varying sizes owned by Masai communities. Conservancies are managed privately for the purpose of conservation, and a safari in a conservancy offers a more exclusive experience. Due to the limited number of vehicles per game drive, it is possible to experience the African wilderness without encountering a huge number of other vehicles. There are also limitations on the number of guests who can stay within some of the conservancies. Many safari experiences are available in the private conservancies which all contribute to having an unrivalled safari experience. Visitors that stay in the conservancy can also enter the Masai Mara National Reserve, where a park fee will apply.
