24 Somak Holidays 020 8423 3000 Great Rift Valley Lakes The main lakes of Kenya's Great Rift Valley include Lake Nakuru, Lake Naivasha, Lake Magadi and Lake Victoria. The area is a birdwatcher's paradise with a plethora of bird species. Lake Nakuru National Park is a fenced area, which provides a sanctuary to one of the largest populations of rhinos in Kenya, as well as Rothschild's giraffes, leopards and lions. The alkaline lake often attracts flamingos, pelicans, cormorants and terns. Over 240 species of birds have been recorded in and around the freshwater Lake Naivasha. The best time for bird watching is from October to March when the migrant birds from Europe inhabit the area. Lake Naivasha Lake Naivasha is one of only two freshwater lakes in Kenya’s Rift Valley. Surrounded by thick papyrus and forests of yellow acacia trees, it is a haven for many animals including giraffes, buffaloes, colobus monkeys and hippos. It is a lovely relaxed destination where you can easily spend 2 nights enjoying various experiences, such as walking, or a boat ride, or a walk on Crescent Island. See pages 16 and 17 for more details. Hells Gate National Park is close by, lying south of Lake Naivasha and named after a narrow breach in the cliffs, once a tributary of a lake which flowed into the Rift Valley. For the more adventurous, you can climb the nearby Mt Longonot, an extinct volcano. Lake Naivasha Sopa Lodge The lodge is set in beautiful grounds with acacia trees surrounding the lake which is host to a variety of game including giraffes, buffaloes and the elusive black faced colobus monkey.
