www.somak.co.uk 23 Aberdare National Park The picturesque Aberdare National Park is characterised by steep forested ravines and open moorland. It has amazing views of Mount Kenya and its nearest town is Nyeri. It is home to elephants, black rhinos, leopards, spotted hyenas, olive baboons, black and white colobus monkeys, buffalos, warthogs and bushbucks among others. Rare sightings include the giant forest hog, bongo, golden cat, serval cat, African wild cat, African civet cat and the blue duiker. Treetop lodges are a popular option in the Aberdares. They all overlook watering holes where a variety of animals come to drink; so you can just sit back, relax and enjoy wildlife watching from the comfort of your lodge. We offer a variety of treetop lodges including Treetops, Ark Lodge and Serena Mountain Lodge. They all offer comfortable guest rooms and wonderful views. You can even have wake up calls in the night should a particular animal you wish to see visit the watering hole. For more details see page 35. Outspan/Treetops The Outspan Hotel in Nyeri is a comfortable hotel set in well tended tropical gardens with manicured lawns and with breathtaking views of Mt Kenya. Lord Baden-Powell, the Scouts Movement founder spent his last years within the grounds of Outspan. Treetops, in the heart of the Aberdare National Park is a tree-house lodge on stilts overlooking a waterhole, and is famous because this is, where Queen Elizabeth II visited as a princess and left as a queen. Aberdare Country Club/ Ark Lodge Nestled on the slopes of Mwega Hill, Aberdare Country Club has the charm of a private home combined with the comforts of a country inn. The Ark, in the heart of the Aberdare National Park, overlooks a floodlit waterhole and salt lick, which attracts a host of wildlife. It is named after Noah’s Ark. Serena Mountain Lodge This lodge, part of the renowned Serena group, offers a matchless game viewing opportunity, whilst combining a glorious panorama of mountain vistas, The lodge's waterhole attracts a near constant stream of wildlife.
