The city itself may be just over a century old, but is the human heart of the country – most markedly the Masai tribe – has a history that runs far deeper. Nairobi, also has the distinction of being the only capital city to have a National Park teeming with wildlife on its doorstep. David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust A must-visit is the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, a world-renowned elephant rescue centre where over 200 infant elephants have been hand-raised and rehabilitated into the wild. Feeding time is between 11am-12pm when you have the chance to meet some of the orphaned elephants, who you can choose to foster, as well as hear about each of their stories. From £35 per person Giraffe Centre & Karen Blixen Museum A visit to the Giraffe Centre is highly recommended. Here you can feed the resident Rothschild’s giraffe, as well as learn all about their conservation and admire the lively warthogs. The Karen Blixen Museum is the former African home of the Danish author Karen Blixen, famous for her book “Out of Africa” – enjoy a guided tour. From £50 per person Ocean Sole Ocean Sole is a Kenyan recycling social enterprise that's creating amazing and unique pieces of art and fashion from discarded flip-flops and other plastic junk salvaged from piles of rubbish that wash up on Kenya's sandy beaches. It employs locals from low-income households. From £30 per person. Kazuri Beads Kazuri, which means “small and beautiful” in Swahili, is the name of a wonderful workshop in the Karen area which you can visit. Each ceramic kazuri bead is handmade by the single mothers and otherwise disadvantaged women who work there. From £30 per person. Culinary Experiences The restaurant scene in Nairobi is diverse with lots of fantastic restaurants to choose from. We can make recommendations based on your preferences, below are two popular choices: Carnivore Restaurant Considered to be 'Africa's Greatest Eating Experience’, it is a fun and lively venue with a huge variety of charcoal-roasted meats as well as a selection of vegetarian dishes. An army of servers move from table to table carrying the Masai swords laden with different prime meats which they carve onto the sizzling, cast iron plates in front of each guest. A three course feast with tea/coffee for lunch or dinner costs from £50 per person. Nyama Mama Often referred to as the ultimate Kenyan culinary experience, serving home-style, locally inspired cuisine with a modern twist. 3-course menu, with Kenya tea/coffee, for lunch from £45 per person, and dinner from £55 per person.
