www.somak.co.uk 17 Private conservancy experiences If you choose to stay in a private conservancy, you will have an opportunity to visit local community projects, local schools, and here, as part of your accommodation additional experiences like sundowners, bush breakfast, picnic lunches, walking safari and quad biking may be included depending on which accommodation you choose. For stays at selected properties in Lewa and Laikipia Conservancy, in the northern region of Kenya, there are additional safari experiences available. These include camel treks and a visit to Ngare Ndare Forest with its canopy walkway, or swimming in the waterfalls. Cultural visit to a local village Get a first-hand insight into Masai heritage and culture by visiting a Masai village. This is such an enriching experience as you will get to see how the locals live. Occasionally there are opportunities available to visit a local school where you can see how friendly and happy the children are. Our Somak employees Amanda and Tolly visited a local school in Tsavo National Park which was a wonderful experience where they were able to interact with the children as well as enjoy some lovely performances that the children surprised them with. The Chimpanzee Sanctuary and Ol Pejeta Rhino Sanctuary At the forefront of the Kenyan conservancy programme, Ol Pejeta boasts the largest black rhino sanctuary in East Africa, hosts the only chimpanzee sanctuary in Kenya, and shelters large numbers of rare and endangered species. You can visit the chimpanzee and rhino sanctuary at Ol Pejeta on our Serena Explorer Safari, more details of which can be found on page 37. Alternatively, we can incorporate this into a bespoke tailor-made safari itinerary for you. Adventure camping This camping safari has been designed to offer a high quality wildlife safari experience whilst enjoying the thrill of 'real camping’ at a reasonable price. This experience is perfect for the discerning traveller and accommodation will involve staying in 2-man dome tents. Each tent has its own flush toilet and safari shower located behind the tent. This experience is available in private conservancies, either next to Amboseli National Park or the Masai Mara Game Reserve. ‘Star Beds’ sleep beneath the stars Sleep beneath the stars on a four-poster ‘star bed’ that can be rolled out on to your balcony, and watch the Milky Way move across the African night sky at Loisaba, in northern Kenya. Imagine waking up to a beautiful sunrise and watching the wildlife graze across the savannah! For more details see page 48 and 49.
