www.somak.co.uk 15 What’s new The Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) Madaraka Express The SGR Madaraka Express is the fastest train in Kenya’s history, operating at an average of 75 miles per hour, almost double the speed of the now-defunct Kenya–Uganda Railway, which was built in 1901 during the colonial era. It has shortened the travel time between Nairobi and Mombasa to less than five hours while road travel can take up to eight hours.
