Apart from the city of Durban, highlights include the Indian Ocean beaches dotted along the coast, and to the west the Drakensberg Mountains that dominate the landscape. Umhlanga is an extension of Durban just to the north of the city and is a haven for beach lovers, shoppers and those looking to eat out. Drakensberg Mountains The Drakensberg Mountains is South Africa’s highest range, reaching a height of 3,482 m and extending some 1,000 km. From Cathedral’s Peak to the Blyde River Canyon, the views are an assault on your senses. Highlights include the view from the escarpment at God’s Window, and the amazing stone features of Bourke’s Luck Potholes and the Three Rondavels. The Battlefields Nothing can prepare you for the emotions you feel upon visiting these sites from the not too distant past. The main attractions are the Anglo-Boer War sites of Isandlawana and Rorke’s Drift, but visits to Ladysmith and Blood River are also to be recommended. A trip to the Battlefields combines well with a tour of the Drakensberg Mountains. Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park Considered to be South Africa’s oldest reserve, it was established in 1895. 96,000 hectares of wilderness, rolling hills and magnificent wildlife await. There is the opportunity to see the ‘big 5’ here. You can either travel in a safari vehicle with an experienced guide, or you can make your own way around in your own vehicle, sticking to the semi-paved road. St Lucia St Lucia is a pretty coastal town located at the southern end of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park, where you can take a boat trip for close encounters with hippos and crocodiles, and spot the amazing birdlife. There are plenty of places to stay and a wide variety of shops, restaurants, cafés and bars, or you could just chill out on the beach. Durban Drakensberg Mountains
